Winter garlic variety "ARKUS"

Allium sativum var ophioscorodon

The winter garlic variety Arkus is one of the most productive and highly valued varieties among gardeners, thanks to its large, firm bulbs and excellent taste. These garlics form uniform, dense cloves with a strong aroma — ideal for both fresh consumption and long-term storage.

Arkus stands out for its excellent winter hardiness, strong root system, and high resistance to diseases, thus ensuring stable yields in various weather conditions. This variety is especially popular in professional farms and home gardens, where quality and reliability are appreciated.

History

Arkus is a relatively new Eastern European winter hardneck garlic variety, developed by selecting high-yielding and winter-hardy local populations. The development of the variety began at the beginning of the 21st century, when regional breeders tried to create garlic that would simultaneously be:

  • very winter-hardy,

  • with large, heavy bulbs,

  • resistant to soil and climate fluctuations,

  • suitable for market needs — visually attractive and uniform.

The name “Arkus” is associated with the designation of the selection line, which over time became established as a separate, stable variety. It quickly gained popularity in Ukraine, Belarus, and the Baltics, where climatic conditions are challenging and yield stability is important.

Nowadays, Arkus is considered a promising, productive variety suitable for professional farms, which grows well in both intensive and organic production.
