History

Дюшес is one of the old local hardneck garlic lines selected in Russia and Southern Ukraine. The variety was developed as a folk selection, with the largest, tastiest, and most resilient heads being selected in rural farms over many years. The name “Дюшес” comes from a popular aroma designation (like “Duchess”), highlighting the variety’s expressive yet mildly sweet aroma.

  1. In the second half of the century, the variety became popular in Russia and Ukraine because it tolerates cold well, gives stable yields, and forms neat, market-quality heads. Today, Дюшес is grown as one of the classic East European winter garlic varieties.
