History

The well-known Latvian garlic variety “Kente” is the result of local selection, developed in the early 2000s using hardy Baltic-origin hardneck lines. The aim of the selection was to obtain a variety that:

  • overwinters well in Latvia's changing climate,

  • forms consistently large, symmetrical bulbs,

  • is resistant to freezing and stem diseases,

  • gives stable yields even in wet summers.

The variety was selected and stabilized in local farms and trial fields, where it was tested for several years under various growing conditions. Over time, it became especially popular in Latvian home gardens and organic farms, as it proved to be hardy and productive even in harsh years.
