Garlic variety Merefian – aromatic and hardy variety

The garlic variety Merefian is a high-quality, hardy and tasty variety, perfectly suited for both home gardens and larger cultivation fields. This variety stands out with a strong aroma, large and evenly formed garlic bulbs, as well as good storage ability.

History

Мerefian is a Ukrainian-origin winter hardneck garlic variety, named in honor of the town of Merefa in the south of Kharkiv region — an area with long-standing horticultural traditions. The variety was developed in local farms and selection fields, where breeders and gardeners selected especially winter-hardy and productive lines from local populations.

The history of the variety begins in the second half of the 20th century, when targeted selection was carried out in the Merefa area with the aim to create garlic that:

  • can withstand very cold winters,

  • is resistant to drought and heat waves,

  • forms large, firm bulbs with a pronounced aroma,

  • ensures a stable and commercially attractive yield.

Over time, Мерефянский became popular throughout the Kharkiv region, later spreading more widely in Ukraine and later also to neighboring countries, including the Baltics. It was favored by organic farms, as the variety grows well without intensive chemical plant protection.

Today, Мерефянский is considered one of the most reliable traditional Ukrainian hardneck varieties with stable quality and strong flavor.

Advantages:

  • Tasty and aromatic: ideal for cooking, offering a rich garlic flavor.

  • Disease resistant: ensures a stable yield even in changing climatic conditions.

  • Large bulb variety: easy to separate, peel, and store.

  • Long storage period: retains freshness and flavor until even the end of winter.

Cultivation:
The Merefian variety grows best in a sunny location with well-ventilated, nutrient-rich soil. Regular watering and fertilization ensure strong plant development and abundant yield.
