Winter/summer garlic variety "Zhanub"

Zhanub is a strong, hardy early winter/summer garlic variety that forms large, firm bulbs with beautiful purple or purple-white veining. They are resistant to cold, form large symmetrical cloves, and provide a stable yield even in harsh conditions.

The variety stands out for its extremely strong, sharp flavor, high essential oil content, and good aroma that persists even after long storage. “Zhanub” is very suitable for both fresh culinary use and thermal processing – stews, marinades, and meat dishes.

It is an excellent choice for both winter planting and spring, as it develops strong roots and quickly adapts to the Latvian climate.

History

Zhanub is a hardneck garlic variety of Central Asian origin, whose roots can be traced to the southern regions of Uzbekistan and Tajikistan. The name “Zhanub” means “south” in several Turkic and Persian languages, reflecting its geographical origin.

Historically, these garlics were cultivated in mountain valleys and dry, hot plateau regions, where local farmers selected plants over generations for:

  • exceptional heat resistance,

  • good drought tolerance,

  • early production,

  • strong, intensely spicy flavor.

Thus, a strong and distinctive line was formed, which was later named Zhanub.

  1. At the end of the century, as interest in exotic, unusual hardneck garlic varieties grew in Western Europe and North America, Zhanub was introduced into breeding collections and quickly gained recognition. It was especially valued for its distinctive flavor, remarkable purple color, and adaptability to both hot and temperate climates.

Today, Zhanub is considered one of the most valuable Central Asian geographic garlic genotypes.
