Winter garlic "ANTON"
Allium sativum var sativum ssp artichoke Asiatic Group
Anton is one of the most reliable and popular hardneck winter garlic varieties in Northern Europe, especially favored in Latvia, Lithuania, and Poland. It is characterized by large, firm bulbs, uniformly large cloves, and a strong, pronounced garlic flavor that is well preserved during cooking.
The variety is known for its excellent winter hardiness, stable yield, and high adaptability to different soil conditions. Anton develops thick, purple-striped skins and produces 6–8 large cloves, making it especially convenient for culinary use.
History
The Anton variety originated in Eastern Europe, where it has been cultivated for several decades as a particularly hardy winter garlic line. It is classified among the preserved regional varieties that farmers have selected through natural selection principles.
-
It gained wider recognition in the 1990s–2000s, when interest arose in cold-resistant varieties for commercial cultivation.
-
In the Baltic region, Anton became popular because it can form large bulbs even in shorter summers and does not suffer from winter temperature fluctuations.
-
The variety is often called one of the most stable winter hardneck varieties in northern climates.
Nowadays, Anton is commonly found in professional farms in Latvia, thanks to its reliability, yield, and excellent flavor.
