Winter garlic "PSKEM"

Allium sativum var ophioscorodon subvar marbled purple stripe

Pskem is an ancient hardneck garlic variety of Central Asian origin, distinguished by its especially strong aroma, large cloves and excellent resistance to heat and drought. The garlics are usually white with a mild purple hue, but the cloves are firm, juicy and richly aromatic.

Pskem is highly valued both in professional gastronomy and agriculture, as it adapts well to various climatic conditions, forms high-quality, uniform bulbs and is in demand in markets due to its exotic origin.

History

Pskem (named after the Pskem valley in Uzbekistan) is one of the oldest local garlic lines in Central Asia. It developed as a result of natural selection in mountainous and arid regions, where local farmers for centuries selected plants with:

  • better drought and heat resistance,

  • lower disease susceptibility,

  • stronger flavor and larger cloves.

  1. At the end of the century, Pskem reached Western European and US collectors, where it quickly gained recognition as a very aromatic, hardy and stable hardneck garlic. Today, Pskem is considered one of the most valuable Central Asian genetic resources in garlic breeding.
