Winter/summer garlic "SIMONETTI"
Allium sativum var sativum ssp artichoke
Simonetti (Simonet) is an old, high-quality Italian softneck garlic variety, distinguished by its mild yet distinctly aromatic flavor and good storage capability. This variety forms medium-sized, dense heads with several small and medium-sized cloves, whose skins are light creamy with gentle pink touches. Since Simonetti does not form a flower stalk, it devotes all its energy to head formation, resulting in a consistent, high-quality yield.
Simonettti is especially valued in cooking – it is mild enough for fresh use, but aromatic enough to stand out in stews, pastas, and marinades. The variety is adaptable to various growing conditions, especially in regions with warmer winters.
History
The Simonettti variety originated in north-central Italy, where it was grown on small family farms as a universal and well-storing table garlic. Historically, it was a popular market variety because it produced consistently and stored well all winter. In the 20th century, it was also distributed to other European countries, where it was appreciated for its milder flavor and excellent durability. Today, Simonetti is considered one of the classic Mediterranean softneck garlics.
