Winter garlic "TEHAN"
Allium sativum var ophioscorodon
Tehan is a winter garlic variety that belongs to the hardneck (porcelain/purple stripe type) group and is known for its distinctly strong aroma, large cloves, and good resistance to cold. The variety forms sturdy, straight flower stalks and also stands out for its consistent yield and large bulb size.
Tehan garlic forms 5–8 large, easy-to-peel cloves with a light pale, sometimes pinkish-violet skin. The taste is sharp, rich, and long-lasting, making Tehan an excellent choice for various culinary techniques—from pickling to hot dishes. The variety is hardy, well-adapted to cold climates, and suitable for growing both in home gardens and professional farms.
History
The Tehan variety is historically associated with regions where the winter-type hardneck group has traditionally been cultivated—Eastern Europe and Central Asia. The variety was developed by selecting cold-resistant, strong garlic that could withstand both winter frost and spring temperature fluctuations. In the 20th century, Tehan also made its way to Western Europe and the USA, where it was appreciated for its large clove size, intense flavor, and reliable yield. Today, it is one of the most popular winter varieties among professional growers.
