Winter garlic "UZBEK TURBAN"

Allium sativum var sativum ssp artichoke subvar turban

Uzbek Turban is an ancient, Central Asian origin softneck garlic variety, which stands out for its very early ripening, pronounced aroma, and decorative purple coloring. Although the name "Turban" is traditionally also used in the hardneck group, in gardening practice, Uzbek Turban is classified as a soft (softneck) garlic, which does not form a flower stalk, but retains the beautiful purple skin tone characteristic of Central Asian garlics.

The bulbs are medium-sized, forming 10–16 cloves, with bright purple or striped outer skins. The taste is sharp, warm, and slightly sweet aftertaste, making this variety suitable for both fresh use and dishes with an Eastern accent. The variety tolerates heat and drought well, while also providing a good yield even in moderate climates.

History

in the dry steppe climate. Traditionally selected as an early, long-storing softneck garlic, it was widespread in markets since the times of the Silk Road.
In Europe, the variety became popular only at the end of the 20th century, when gardeners and gourmet restaurants paid attention to its intense flavor and beautiful purple skin.

Today, Uzbek Turban is considered one of the most interesting Central Asian softneck garlics, especially because of its early harvest and long storage period.
