Winter garlic "VAYO"
Allium sativum var ophioscorodon
Vayo is a high-yielding and resilient hardneck type winter garlic variety, distinguished by very large heads, consistent yield, and a distinctly upright flower stalk. This variety is especially popular in Central and Northern Europe, where it demonstrates excellent frost resistance, adaptability to various soils, and good tolerance to spring temperature fluctuations.
Vayo heads are large and compact, usually with 6–9 massive cloves, whose skins are colored in a gentle yellow or whitish-violet tone. The taste is strong, sharp, but clean, without bitterness, with a very aromatic garlic core. The variety is suitable for both everyday cooking and professional production.
Vayo offers a good balance between intense flavor, large clove size, and resistance to adverse conditions, making it popular in both large farms and small gardens.
History
The Vayo variety originated from Central European breeders' selection at the end of the 20th century, choosing large-headed, winter-hardy hardneck garlic from colder climate regions. Vayo quickly spread in the Baltics, Poland, and Germany, where it was valued for its large head size, flavor, and reliability. Today, it is considered one of the most suitable hardneck varieties for professional growers in northern climates.
