Winter garlic "VEKAN", or "VEKAK"
Allium sativum var ophioscorodon subvar glazed purple stripe
Vekak/Vekan is a winter hardneck (cietkāta) garlic variety from the Czech Republic, well suited for cold climates. It forms very uniform, large heads with 6–10 massive cloves and a distinctly rich aroma. This variety is especially favored by gardeners in the Baltics, Scandinavia, and Central Europe because it is hardy, reliable, and productive.
The heads are compactly formed, with a white or slightly purple-tinged wrapper. The flesh is firm, juicy, with a distinctly sharp but pleasant taste. The variety stands out for its very good frost resistance and stable yield even in challenging winter conditions.
History
The VEKAK/VEKAN variety originated in the Czech Republic in the second half of the 20th century, by selecting winter garlics with particularly high hardiness and large heads. Its development is based on Purple Stripe type garlic lines, known for their productivity and aroma.
In a short time, it became popular in Poland and Germany, where climatic conditions require hardy and stable varieties. To this day, Vekan/Vekak is considered one of the most reliable winter hardneck varieties suitable for northern climates.
