Winter garlic "Zhiemiai"

ZHIEMIAI is a Baltic-origin hardneck (hardneck) winter garlic variety, distinguished by its very good winter hardiness, stable yield, and pronounced, slightly sharp taste. It is one of the varieties grown in the Baltics for several decades, thanks to its ability to survive winters even at -25°C to -30°C and to form high-quality, large bulbs.
The bulbs are usually white-violet, compactly formed, with evenly arranged cloves. The variety is highly valued both in households and small farms, where a hardy and not overly demanding garlic is needed.
The taste is strong but harmonious, suitable for both fresh consumption and thermal processing.
History
The variety Zhiemiai was developed and selected in Lithuania as a cold-resistant, reliable winter garlic line intended for cultivation in regions with harsh winters. The name “Žiemiai” translates as “winter” or “winter-hardy”, which precisely describes its essence. It became widespread among farmers at the end of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st century, who were looking for a stable, reliable variety for the Baltic climate. Today, Zhiemiai is one of the most popular winter garlics in Lithuania and the southern part of Latvia.
